One
of the most overlooked responsibilities of pet owners is first aid preparation. How many of you have a
first aid kit for your four legged friend? My guess is; not too
many of you. Please take the time to read this article and the few minutes it
will take to put together your doggie first aid kit. Most of what you need you
may already have in your home. Assemble these items in a portable kit that you
can also take with you when traveling.
Below is a list of items for your first aid kit:

You can always purchase a first aid kit from your local pet store or online. The important thing is that you will be prepared when your dog needs you. Please understand this is only a proactive approach to the inevitable situation that you will encounter. You just need to be able to address your pup's problem until she can be seen by a veterinarian.
Below is a list of items for your first aid kit:
- Saline Wash - Opti-Clear works well to wash wounds and eyes.
- Bactine - Yes, Bactine. Bactine is an excellent wound antiseptic and will not "sting" like alcohol.
- Hydrogen peroxide - To antiseptically clean wounds. It can also be used to induce vomiting.
- Alcohol/Alcohol Pads - Be mindful that alcohol will be painful when applied.
- Gauze Pads, Gauze Roll, Feminine Pads
- Q Tips
- Triple Antibiotic
- Vet Wrap - Probably the single most effective product to dress a canine wound. Vet Wrap is available in an assortment of colors and widths. Stock up on this product. It is easy to apply and is used in conjunction with gauze or other wound dressings. The advantages to Vet Wrap are that it is easy to apply and is less likely to cut off your pup's circulation.
- Medical Tape - Be careful with tape, it is very easy to apply the tape too tight and cut off the dog's blood flow.
- Duct Tape - Yes, Duct Tape. Duct Tape can serve many first aid purposes. It can secure a wound dressing (always be careful to not apply it too tight). Duct tape can also be fashioned as a cast or a deterrent to prevent chewing.
- Aspirin - For pain relief. 2.5 to 5 mg per pound, twice a day. Never give your dog Tylenol (Acetaminophen).
- Pepto-Bismol (pink bismuth) - Helps with upset stomachs and diarrhea. Never exceed the child's dosage.
- Electrolytes - Pedialyte is an excellent powdered electrolyte supplement that will benefit your pup during periods of dehydration. This can be especially beneficial when your pup refuses to eat. Adding some chicken stock may increase your dog's interest in consuming this supplement.
- Scissors

- Cold Packs - Instant if possible.

have very little body mass. And some dogs just don't have heavy coats of

An older dog that gets chilled can benefit from some extra layers. Older dogs may get cold and are no longer able to generate the body heat they once did. Nothing beats a new adventure. To make it even
better, take your favorite furry friend along. You will both enjoy the new
sights, sounds and smells that await you. Here are a few tips to make your trip
easier, when traveling by air with your small pet.
- Plan Ahead - You will need to check with the
airline to ensure they allow pets in the main cabin of the aircraft. You will be
required to make a separate reservation for your pet. The cost per pet will
range from $70-$125 each way. Most airlines have a limit regarding the number of
pets they allow, in the main cabin, on each flight. So reserve your pet's flight
when you book your own.
- Pet Carrier -
You will need an airline approved pet carrier
for your little companion. Airline approved carriers are designed to fit under
the seat in front of you. However, many isle seats will not be large enough to
accommodate a pet carrier.
Go to your airlines website for more information on acceptable carriers and carrier dimensions. Your pet needs to be comfortable and have the
available space to stand and turn around inside the carrier. In
the weeks prior to your trip, work with your pet to get them comfortable with
their carrier. Including familiar items like a toy and
blanket are good idea. Just be sure the items you put in the carrier are
not too bulky. Please be aware, a pet carrier is considered a piece of carry-on
luggage. Most airlines only allow two pieces of carry on luggage per
passenger.
- Heath Certificate - Most airlines require a
current health certificate from your veterinarian. This means your pet must be
in good health and be up to date on all their shots. A current health
certificate is one that is obtained 10-30 days prior to travel. Check with your
airline to determine the appropriate time frame. If your trip will exceed the
airlines health certificate expiration time frame, you may need to obtain
another health certificate for your return flight home.
- Sedation - If you have never traveled by air
with your pet, or you have a high-strung pet, you may want to consider sedating
your pet. Talk to your veterinarian, at the time you are getting your health
certificate, to determine if this is appropriate for your pet. There are

to prescription sedatives.
- Pre-Flight Meal - Be sure your pet's last
meal was at least 8 hours prior to flying. A light dinner, the night before
travel, is best. A slightly hungry pet will be more comfortable than a pet that

for your pet to reward them for good behavior during your trip. Allow your pet
to drink water up to an hour before your flight. When in the terminal, pick up a
bottle of water. You can offer your pet a sip or two if you feel they may be
dehydrated.
- Potty Break - Always give your pet an
opportunity to go potty before your flight and on long lay overs (if

airport, but this doesn't mean it is allowed. Airports can be very crowded with
passengers running through airports with large pieces of luggage in tow. Not to
mention, the passenger transfer carts zipping through the terminal. It is best
to keep your little-one off the ground.
- Clothing - It is not recommended to outfit your pet with a shirt, sweater or coat when traveling by plane. This may cause them to overheat and can hinder their ability to move causing them to get tangled inside the carrier. However, plane cabin temperatures can be unpredictable. You also need to take into account the temperature of the locations you will be visiting. Bring along a shirt or sweater, in the event, the plane is too cold. If you feel the need to clothe your pet, check on them periodically.

If you are
like me you want to take your dogs with you everywhere you go, and vacations are
no exception. In fact, many of the destinations I choose are a result of pain
staking research to determine acceptable locations for my dogs and me. For
example, we just returned from Howard Creek Ranch Inn, a rustic B&B on the
Mendocino coast of California. Howard Creek Inn is pet friendly with acres of
old growth forest to hike and direct access to the beach. We had a great time
because we did the following:
- Plan Ahead: Find places that are pet friendly. More and more hotels and B&B's are allowing pets for a nominal fee. Call ahead to find out if there are any restrictions they may have regarding pet size or the number of pets allowed. Most hotels and B&B's will not allow you to leave your dog unattended in the room unless they are crated. AAA offers the guide "Traveling with Your Pet" which is available at most book stores.
- Pre-Travel Meal: Feed your dog a light meal before you travel. Depending on how much time you have available from feeding time to your departure time, will determine how much to feed your pet. You know your pet's digestion and evacuation schedule. Just plan accordingly. If you will be flying, it is best to skip breakfast.
- Potty Breaks: Everybody needs potty breaks and your dog is no exception. This a good time for you and your dog to stretch your legs. Make sure his collar or harness is on and you can locate his leash. Lastly, be sure to bring along an ample supply of poop bags. Be considerate and clean up after your dog. - Bring Water: Believe or not, your dog can get dehydrated just sitting in the back seat of the car. Bring water from home or pick up some bottled water. You will need a water bowl. 13 Excellent Tips for Doggie Bathing at Home
- First of all, you need to relax. If you are nervous and tense your dog will sense it. If you are calm, he will have a better chance of staying calm.
- If your home is cold; turnoff the air conditioning or turn up the heat.
- Brushing your pup will reduce the amount of bathing required. Daily brushing helps keep the coat clean and tangle free. Sometimes too many baths may lead to dry skin.
- Consider the size of your dog. Little dogs can be bathed in the sink. This will give your back relief from bending over. Larger breeds will need to be placed in the shower or bath tub. In either case the dogs will need warm water, a non-slip mat to stand on and a hand-held shower head or kitchen faucet side sprayer.
- Using a pet shampoo is good idea because it is specifically formulated and pH balanced for your canine's skin. The addition of a coat conditioner will make brushing and grooming the long-haired breeds much easier after bathing.
- Bath time should be a bonding time for you and your furry friend. Make it a pleasant experience by offering your dog treats to reinforce positive behaviors.
- Slowly get your dog used to the warm water by gentle spraying your dog from tail to the back of her head. Never start the bath by spraying the dog in the face. Be sure to test the water, on yourself, before applying it to your dog. The water should be lukewarm or tepid. A dog can't tolerate very warm or hot water. A dog's sensitive skin can actually be burned if the water is too warm or hot.
- When shampooing your pet, first refer to the recommendations of the shampoo you are using for quantity. Start shampooing from the tail and move to the back. Next shampoo the neck and belly. Shampoo the head last being very careful to keep shampoo out of the dog's eyes and ears. Cotton balls can be used to keep the shampoo and water from entering the dog's ears.
- Use the bath time as an opportunity to give your dog a complete skin and body exam. Check for bumps, lumps, bites and cuts. The best time to do this is when you are rinsing the shampoo off your pup.
- When it is time to rinse out the shampoo, rinse in the very sequence of the shampooing. Start with the head and end with the tail. It is always best to rinse twice to thoroughly remove the entire shampoo residue. Give extra attention to the areas between the toes and legs.
- After bath time dry your pal with a soft absorbent towel. Microfiber towels are very absorbent and very soft. Long haired breeds may need a quick blow dry. It is best to only use blow dryers designed for pet grooming. Human blow dryers are too hot in most cases. Shorter coats will dry quickly.
- Once the dog is dry she will need a good brushing. Bathing will accelerate the shedding process. A good brushing is the perfect finishing touch to remove all the loose hair and make your pups coat shine.
- To cap it off, reward your dog with a yummy treat. This is the perfect way to end with a positive experience.
