Doggie First Aid Made Simple

Doggie First Aid Made Simple

Expert Author Elizabeth Daschner
One of the most overlooked responsibilities of pet owners is first aid preparation. How many of you have a first aid kit for your four legged friend? My guess is; not too many of you. Please take the time to read this article and the few minutes it will take to put together your doggie first aid kit. Most of what you need you may already have in your home. Assemble these items in a portable kit that you can also take with you when traveling.
Below is a list of items for your first aid kit:

  • Saline Wash - Opti-Clear works well to wash wounds and eyes.
  • Bactine - Yes, Bactine. Bactine is an excellent wound antiseptic and will not "sting" like alcohol.
  • Hydrogen peroxide - To antiseptically clean wounds. It can also be used to induce vomiting.
  • Alcohol/Alcohol Pads - Be mindful that alcohol will be painful when applied.
  • Gauze Pads, Gauze Roll, Feminine Pads
  • Q Tips
  • Triple Antibiotic
  • Vet Wrap - Probably the single most effective product to dress a canine wound. Vet Wrap is available in an assortment of colors and widths. Stock up on this product. It is easy to apply and is used in conjunction with gauze or other wound dressings. The advantages to Vet Wrap are that it is easy to apply and is less likely to cut off your pup's circulation.
  • Medical Tape - Be careful with tape, it is very easy to apply the tape too tight and cut off the dog's blood flow.
  • Duct Tape - Yes, Duct Tape. Duct Tape can serve many first aid purposes. It can secure a wound dressing (always be careful to not apply it too tight). Duct tape can also be fashioned as a cast or a deterrent to prevent chewing.
  • Aspirin - For pain relief. 2.5 to 5 mg per pound, twice a day. Never give your dog Tylenol (Acetaminophen).
  • Pepto-Bismol (pink bismuth) - Helps with upset stomachs and diarrhea. Never exceed the child's dosage.
  • Electrolytes - Pedialyte is an excellent powdered electrolyte supplement that will benefit your pup during periods of dehydration. This can be especially beneficial when your pup refuses to eat. Adding some chicken stock may increase your dog's interest in consuming this supplement.
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Digital Thermometer
  • Surgical Gloves
  • Cold Packs - Instant if possible.
  • Magnifying Glass
  • Eye Dropper
  • Pet First Aid Guide

You should always have the following phone numbers easily accessible:

  • ASPCA Poison Control - 800-548-2423 and 888-426-4435
  • Your local 24 hour Veterinary Hospital
  • Your personal veterinarian

You can always purchase a first aid kit from your local pet store or online. The important thing is that you will be prepared when your dog needs you. Please understand this is only a proactive approach to the inevitable situation that you will encounter. You just need to be able to address your pup's problem until she can be seen by a veterinarian.

Should Dogs Get Dressed Up?

Should Dogs Get Dressed Up?

Expert Author Elizabeth Daschner
Dogs like people get cold for a number of reasons. Older dogs are less active and may have poor circulation. Small dogs have very little body mass. And some dogs just don't have heavy coats of fur.
So, instead of "cranking" up the heat, you might try dressing up your pooch.
An older dog that gets chilled can benefit from some extra layers. Older dogs may get cold and are no longer able to generate the body heat they once did. Try adorning your boy with a soft and cozy fleece from Animal Wrappers. Always be sure to get the correct size for your dog. A too restrictive garment may contribute to his already poor circulation.
Dogs with short coats struggle in the cold months to stay warm. This also holds true in the air-conditioned comfort of your home in the hot months. Short coated dogs include Whippets, Greyhounds, Toy Fox Terriers and the popular Chihuahuas. Help them stay warm and stylish with a clever t-shirt from "i see spot." You may want to consider layering with the addition of coat from Puppia. Coats are a fun fashion statement while really making your pal more comfortable.
Dogs that have experienced hair loss or itchy skin can benefit from a natural soft cotton shirt or sweater that rests comfortably against their skin. This will allow the dogs skin to stay clean a free of debris. Clothing is also a barrier against excessive scratching which can help limit further irritation to those hot spots.
In addition to helping your pup stay warm, clothing can help protect your dog from the sun's harmful rays. Brown and black dogs absorb a tremendous amount of the sun's heat. An easy way to avoid this is to dress your dog up in a white (or lightly colored) cotton t-shirt. Too make them even more comfortable on those hot days, try wetting the t-shirt thoroughly with water. Continue to wet the t-shirt down throw out the day. You will be amazed at how well your dog will respond to this approach.
Always remember a good fit is crucial for your pups comfort and acceptance of her new fashion. The garment must not rub, bind or pinch. All manufacturers provide sizing charts for their clothing. For male dogs it is important to choose designs that allow your boy to relieve himself without soaking his shirt.
Never let your dog's clothing get too soiled. It's not healthy for your dog, and it may permanently stain their clothing. Follow the garments care instructions. To avoid shrinkage, hang the clothing up to dry after washing. Choose clothing made of soft, durable and easy to care for fabrics.
Teaching your pooch to enjoy (or tolerate) wearing clothes begins with slow fun sessions. It is always easier starting your dog when she is young. Conversely, older dogs may take to it quickly when they experience the warmth and comfort of a cozy sweater. It's those dogs in the middle that can be a challenge. Not all dogs welcome your efforts to make them comfortable. The process of acceptance needs to be slow and reinforced by lots of treats. Since you will be feeding many treats during these sessions be sure they are healthy treats like Wagatha's.
I have found over the years that dogs that are truly cold and uncomfortable eventually appreciate the extra layer of warmth. A vibrant healthy dog with ample body mas and coat may not want to wear anything. But, even these dogs can don some cool duds long enough for you to get that Christmas card picture.

7 Tips to Keeping Your Dog Slim and Healthy

7 Tips to Keeping Your Dog Slim and Healthy

Expert Author Elizabeth Daschner
Dogs live happier longer lives if they maintain a healthy weight. Obese dogs are more likely to have a number of serious health problems including diabetes, arthritic joints and heart disease, just to name a few. In addition to the health problems, an overweight dog's quality of life suffers due to physical limitations complicated by difficulty breathing, reduced stamina, digestive issues and tolerance to heat.
Here are some basic tips to keep your pooch slim and trim:
1) Feed your dog 2-3 times a day. Several smaller meals are more satisfying and will raise your pup's metabolism. Free feeding an overweight dog (or any dog) is a big "No-No." Free feeding does not allow for portion control. Free feeding attracts insects and can cause food to spoil.
2) Always measure the portions you are feeding your dog. Determine the proper portion size by consulting your veterinarian or refer to the manufacturers' recommended serving size for your dog's size, age and activity level. It's easy to just leave a measuring cup in with the food.
3) There are an extensive variety of dog food options available including holistic/natural dog foods and low-calorie dog foods. If your dog tends to be an "easy keeper," opt for the low-calorie variety. You can also choose the proper dog food by determining what category your dog falls into. The categorized food choices are; puppy, adult, senior, active, overweight, skin & coat, digestive health and allergy.
4) To make meals go further add bulk to the meal in the form of pumpkin or chopped carrots. You can consult your veterinarian to determine the portion size best suited for your dog's size, age and activity level. Diluted chicken/beef broth is also a great way to add flavor and a bit of bulk, to the dry food, so your dog feels more satisfied. Dilute the broth with 3 parts water and 1 part broth. It is best to serve your dog broth that is fat-free and low sodium. Broth is an excellent economical substitute for canned food for those picky eaters.
5) You can purchase dog food bowls designed to slow down your dog's aggressive or fast eating habits.
6) Keep track of any treats your dog gets throughout the day. Treats can really pack on the pounds if you are not careful. Make an effort to only give your dog low-calorie healthy treats. You can find a large selection of healthy natural and organic dog treats from Wagatha's Organic Biscuits and Zuke's. Sojos has a nice selection of grain free treats and food supplements.
7) Exercise is an important component to keeping your dog happy while maintaining their optimum weight. Dogs love to get out and enjoy all the sights and smells a walk provides. Exercise is good for their physiological health and raising their metabolism. A daily 30-45 minute walk can do wonders for your portly friend. Mendota Leather offers a wide selection of collars and leashes for all your dog walking needs. Other exercise options for your pooch can include teaching your dog to walk on a treadmill, dog park play time and fetch. Before subjecting your overweight dog to vigorous exercise, consult your veterinarian. Remember to provide plenty of fresh water for your dog.
You want keep your best friend happy and healthy for many years. Then follow the tips above. Your dog will love you for it.

8 Tips You Must Know When Traveling With Your Pet by Air

8 Tips You Must Know When Traveling With Your Pet by Air

Elizabeth
Nothing beats a new adventure. To make it even better, take your favorite furry friend along. You will both enjoy the new sights, sounds and smells that await you. Here are a few tips to make your trip easier, when traveling by air with your small pet.
  1. Plan Ahead - You will need to check with the airline to ensure they allow pets in the main cabin of the aircraft. You will be required to make a separate reservation for your pet. The cost per pet will range from $70-$125 each way. Most airlines have a limit regarding the number of pets they allow, in the main cabin, on each flight. So reserve your pet's flight when you book your own.
  2. Pet Carrier - You will need an airline approved pet carrier for your little companion. Airline approved carriers are designed to fit under the seat in front of you. However, many isle seats will not be large enough to accommodate a pet carrier. Go to your airlines website for more information on acceptable carriers and carrier dimensions. Your pet needs to be comfortable and have the available space to stand and turn around inside the carrier. In the weeks prior to your trip, work with your pet to get them comfortable with their carrier. Including familiar items like a toy and blanket are good idea. Just be sure the items you put in the carrier are not too bulky. Please be aware, a pet carrier is considered a piece of carry-on luggage. Most airlines only allow two pieces of carry on luggage per passenger.
  3. Heath Certificate - Most airlines require a current health certificate from your veterinarian. This means your pet must be in good health and be up to date on all their shots. A current health certificate is one that is obtained 10-30 days prior to travel. Check with your airline to determine the appropriate time frame. If your trip will exceed the airlines health certificate expiration time frame, you may need to obtain another health certificate for your return flight home.
  4. Sedation - If you have never traveled by air with your pet, or you have a high-strung pet, you may want to consider sedating your pet. Talk to your veterinarian, at the time you are getting your health certificate, to determine if this is appropriate for your pet. There are herbal remedies available for calming and relaxing your pet. Rescue Remedy Pet is an excellent over the counter natural alternative to prescription sedatives.
  5. Pre-Flight Meal - Be sure your pet's last meal was at least 8 hours prior to flying. A light dinner, the night before travel, is best. A slightly hungry pet will be more comfortable than a pet that needs to evacuate. Bring along some small nibbles for your pet to reward them for good behavior during your trip. Allow your pet to drink water up to an hour before your flight. When in the terminal, pick up a bottle of water. You can offer your pet a sip or two if you feel they may be dehydrated.
  6. Potty Break - Always give your pet an opportunity to go potty before your flight and on long lay overs (if appropriate). In advance of your trip research where the Pet Relief areas are located in the airports you will be traveling to. Be sure to bring your pet's collar and leash to allow your pet to stretch their legs safely. Preston Ribbon offers a wide variety of collars and leashes that will express your personality through your pet. Pick a matching collar and leash that is the same theme as your destination. Never forget to bring a supply of poop bags.
  7. Airport Pet Etiquette - Almost all airports do not allow pets to be out of their carriers when in the terminal. However, this rule seems to vary widely from airport to airport. Familiarize yourself with each airport's rules as they relate to pets. You may see dogs on leash in the airport, but this doesn't mean it is allowed. Airports can be very crowded with passengers running through airports with large pieces of luggage in tow. Not to mention, the passenger transfer carts zipping through the terminal. It is best to keep your little-one off the ground.
  8. Clothing - It is not recommended to outfit your pet with a shirt, sweater or coat when traveling by plane. This may cause them to overheat and can hinder their ability to move causing them to get tangled inside the carrier. However, plane cabin temperatures can be unpredictable. You also need to take into account the temperature of the locations you will be visiting. Bring along a shirt or sweater, in the event, the plane is too cold. If you feel the need to clothe your pet, check on them periodically.
The more you travel with your pet the easier it gets. You know your own pet the best. Planning ahead is the best way to ensure a stress free fun trip. Happy Travels!

8 Things to Consider When Traveling With Your Dog

8 Things to Consider When Traveling With Your Dog

Elizabeth

If you are like me you want to take your dogs with you everywhere you go, and vacations are no exception. In fact, many of the destinations I choose are a result of pain staking research to determine acceptable locations for my dogs and me. For example, we just returned from Howard Creek Ranch Inn, a rustic B&B on the Mendocino coast of California. Howard Creek Inn is pet friendly with acres of old growth forest to hike and direct access to the beach. We had a great time because we did the following:

  1. Plan Ahead: Find places that are pet friendly. More and more hotels and B&B's are allowing pets for a nominal fee. Call ahead to find out if there are any restrictions they may have regarding pet size or the number of pets allowed. Most hotels and B&B's will not allow you to leave your dog unattended in the room unless they are crated. AAA offers the guide "Traveling with Your Pet" which is available at most book stores.
  2. Pre-Travel Meal: Feed your dog a light meal before you travel. Depending on how much time you have available from feeding time to your departure time, will determine how much to feed your pet. You know your pet's digestion and evacuation schedule. Just plan accordingly. If you will be flying, it is best to skip breakfast.
  3. Potty Breaks: Everybody needs potty breaks and your dog is no exception. This a good time for you and your dog to stretch your legs. Make sure his collar or harness is on and you can locate his leash. Lastly, be sure to bring along an ample supply of poop bags. Be considerate and clean up after your dog. Dog waste just doesn't magically disappear. Look to Dog Bag for their large assortment of waste bags and dispensers. All Dog Bag poop bags are made of recycled plastic.
  4. Bring Water: Believe or not, your dog can get dehydrated just sitting in the back seat of the car. Bring water from home or pick up some bottled water. You will need a water bowl. There are many water bowls available today designed just for travel. Doggles manufactures a wide variety of unique and creatively decorated travel bowls.
  5. Seat Belt: We all know about the seat belt laws. It's not a myth, seat belts save lives. What is not talked about is that it may save your pet's life to. Your pet's safety should be your primary concern since she can't buckle her own seat belt. She can ride in safety and comfort, in the back seat, with the right gear. A travel harness is a great option. A travel harness will allow your pet to be safely restrained in the case of a sudden stop or accident. Doggles offers a line of standard harnesses that come equipped with a car seat restraint loop. This is a great travel option that allows you to easily detach her from the car's seatbelt, then attach her leash and go for a walk.
  6. Toys and Blankets: Dogs find a sense of comfort and security when they are surrounded by familiar possessions. Always bring their favorite toys and blankets or beds. Familiar smells and textures will ease your pet's travel anxiety.
  7. Treats: Who doesn't like a treat while traveling? Hours cooped up in the car can be improved with a nice treat. A few treats make travel more fun your pooch. But, use them sparingly. You don't want to expedite the pooping process. It's uncomfortable for your pet and may require additional stops.
  8. Travel by Air: I will tell you right now, I am not a big fan of "checking" my pet in like a piece of luggage. Yes, he is a tough dog. Yes, the airlines say they are experts at shipping pets. Just do your due diligence. Now, if your pup fits under the seat, that's another story. Traveling by airplane you will need proper puppy paperwork. Check with the airline to determine what paperwork they require. Your vet will be able to assist you with all paper work requirements. You will also need an "airline approved" carrier. There are a host of stylish options, on the market, that are approved for airline travel and will allow you to look sophisticated about town.

Traveling with your favorite furry friends is best if you plan a head. Follow the tips above to have great vacation.
