Eco-Stylish Pets
We created Eco-Stylish Pets to stay true to our concern for the environment and the welfare of our pets. But, that doesn’t mean your four legged friends have to compromise on style to be “green." We are making every effort to provide our customers with the safest natural pet products available. We have searched the globe for products that are manufactured with natural, renewable or recycled materials. We have spent a great deal of time interviewing manufacturers to determine how, with what and where products are manufactured. Our pets need us to make good decisions for them. We realize not everyone has time to do this. So we do it for you. With four dogs of our own, we know how much you cherish your friends.

To Leash, or Not to Leash?

To Leash, or Not to Leash?

Eco Stylish Pets      Is that really the question?
Whenever you take your dogs in public, they need to be on a leash, except for dog parks. You know your dog won't bite anyone. You know you have a well-trained dog. But, the people around you don't know that, especially non-dog owners and people with children. I have witnessed grown men do everything possible to avoid coming in contact with our 6 pound (three footed) Chihuahua. Yes, that is not a typo, he has only three feet. Vinny, the three footed dog at the center of this example, is a rescue. But, I digress. It is just common courtesy to control your dog.
The good news is there are a number of leash options that allow your dog the freedom to roam. Retractable leashes offer your pup up to 16 foot of leash to cruise around with. Retractable leashes have come along way in recent years. At one time the retractable leash was only for small dogs. Now, you can get a retractable leash that can handle dogs up to 55 pounds. These new retractable leashes are durable and employ a nylon belt lead with advanced braking technology. Not only are these leashes tough, but they come in a variety of colors, patterns and themes. Some of the best retractable leashes are made by flexi and Avant Garde.
If your dog is in training, there are a number of leashes designed just for that. Consider a training collar that can be positioned high on your dog's neck, near the base of the jaw. This will give you the most control, while not causing pain to your dog. If you are working with a puppy, now is the time to establish proper leash training habits. Nothing is better for your dog and his or her training advancement, than long walks on leash.
If your dog is not in training, but needs to be, it is never too late. Sign up for a dog training class at your local parks and recreation department. Or, check out the dog training services available in your area.
Finally, nothing beats a 6 foot colorful poly leash or leather leash, from Mendota Products, for control and training. You can even find stylish ribbon collars and matching leashes, by Preston Ribbons, that are adorned with colorful graphics featuring just about any dog lover's interests or hobbies. Preston Ribbons and Mendota Products manufacture all of their collars, leashes and harnesses in the United States.

7 Tips to Keeping Your Dog Slim and Healthy

7 Tips to Keeping Your Dog Slim and Healthy

Expert Author Elizabeth Daschner
Dogs live happier longer lives if they maintain a healthy weight. Obese dogs are more likely to have a number of serious health problems including diabetes, arthritic joints and heart disease, just to name a few. In addition to the health problems, an overweight dog's quality of life suffers due to physical limitations complicated by difficulty breathing, reduced stamina, digestive issues and tolerance to heat.
Here are some basic tips to keep your pooch slim and trim:
1) Feed your dog 2-3 times a day. Several smaller meals are more satisfying and will raise your pup's metabolism. Free feeding an overweight dog (or any dog) is a big "No-No." Free feeding does not allow for portion control. Free feeding attracts insects and can cause food to spoil.
2) Always measure the portions you are feeding your dog. Determine the proper portion size by consulting your veterinarian or refer to the manufacturers' recommended serving size for your dog's size, age and activity level. It's easy to just leave a measuring cup in with the food.
3) There are an extensive variety of dog food options available including holistic/natural dog foods and low-calorie dog foods. If your dog tends to be an "easy keeper," opt for the low-calorie variety. You can also choose the proper dog food by determining what category your dog falls into. The categorized food choices are; puppy, adult, senior, active, overweight, skin & coat, digestive health and allergy.
4) To make meals go further add bulk to the meal in the form of pumpkin or chopped carrots. You can consult your veterinarian to determine the portion size best suited for your dog's size, age and activity level. Diluted chicken/beef broth is also a great way to add flavor and a bit of bulk, to the dry food, so your dog feels more satisfied. Dilute the broth with 3 parts water and 1 part broth. It is best to serve your dog broth that is fat-free and low sodium. Broth is an excellent economical substitute for canned food for those picky eaters.
5) You can purchase dog food bowls designed to slow down your dog's aggressive or fast eating habits.
6) Keep track of any treats your dog gets throughout the day. Treats can really pack on the pounds if you are not careful. Make an effort to only give your dog low-calorie healthy treats. You can find a large selection of healthy natural and organic dog treats from Wagatha's Organic Biscuits and Zuke's. Sojos has a nice selection of grain free treats and food supplements.
7) Exercise is an important component to keeping your dog happy while maintaining their optimum weight. Dogs love to get out and enjoy all the sights and smells a walk provides. Exercise is good for their physiological health and raising their metabolism. A daily 30-45 minute walk can do wonders for your portly friend. Mendota Leather offers a wide selection of collars and leashes for all your dog walking needs. Other exercise options for your pooch can include teaching your dog to walk on a treadmill, dog park play time and fetch. Before subjecting your overweight dog to vigorous exercise, consult your veterinarian. Remember to provide plenty of fresh water for your dog.
You want keep your best friend happy and healthy for many years. Then follow the tips above. Your dog will love you for it.
